Sri Lanka has recorded a worrying increase in HIV/AIDS cases, with 639 new infections and 13 deaths reported in the first nine months of 2025, the National STD/AIDS Control Programme said.
The figures mark a 6% rise compared to the same period in 2024, which reported 605 cases.
The first quarter of the year alone (January to March) saw the highest number of infections in a single quarter since 2009.
Of the reported cases in 2025, 68 males and three females were aged between 15 and 24, while the remaining cases involved individuals over 25. The male-to-female ratio for new HIV cases stood at approximately 6:1.
Health authorities also reported 30 deaths linked to HIV/AIDS during this period.
Officials have urged increased awareness, early testing, and timely treatment to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS and reduce mortality.
