Smoking among Sri Lankan schoolchildren is on the rise, with many starting as early as 14 or 15, a Specialist Respiratory Physician said.

Dr. Duminda Yasaratne of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital told a media briefing organised by the Health Promotion Bureau that early tobacco use significantly increases the risk of developing serious lung diseases later in life.

He urged stronger prevention efforts and greater awareness among parents and schools to curb the growing trend.
