Health authorities say that one in every four people over the age of 25 may experience a stroke during their lifetime.

Speaking ahead of World Stroke Day, which falls on October 29, Dr. Surangi Somaratna, Specialist Neurologist at the Kalutara Teaching Hospital, revealed that nearly 30% of stroke patients in Sri Lanka are between the ages of 20 and 60, highlighting a worrying rise in cases among younger adults.

Dr. Somaratna stressed that hypertension — or high blood pressure — is a key risk factor in about 50% of stroke cases.

She urged individuals with hypertension to take prescribed medication regularly, undergo routine health checks, and maintain close monitoring by health professionals to prevent complications.

“For those who do not have hypertension, awareness is equally important. Recognising hypertension as a risk factor and taking the necessary preventive measures can significantly reduce the likelihood of a stroke,” Dr. Somaratna said.

Health authorities have also emphasised that vigilance, awareness, and healthy lifestyles — including balanced diets, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol — are crucial to preventing and reducing strokes nationwide.
