Anura Yapa’s arrest, a govt. act of cowardice – Patali

The government arrested former minister Anura Yapa merely because he is giving the leadership to form a powerful political alliance opposed to it, said Patali Champika Ranawaka.

Referring to the arrest of Yapa and his wife over a 2014 flood relief distribution matter, the leader of the United Republic Front (URF) described it as an act of cowardice and political witch-hunt though the government is expected to arrest fraudster Arjuna Mahendran and those responsible for the economic crisis and the e-visa scam.

‘The Anura –Harini government’, in the wake of its dismal failure to lower prices of coconut and rice, and taxation on fuel, has resorted to populist measures of this nature to placate the masses, he said.

Strongly condemning the arrests, the URF leader demanded the government act against the real criminals, failure of which will make him organize a powerful public outcry.

Today, the CID has become one like that existed under the Bolshevik Soviet Union’s police, which is on political hounding against all its opponents, he added.
