Bimal attributes NPP’s vote decline to lack of candidate-focused posters

Minister Bimal Ratnayake has pointed to a campaign strategy of the National People’s Power (NPP) as a key reason for its underperformance in certain areas during the recent local government elections.

Speaking during a programme on Swarnavahini, Ratnayake said the NPP’s decision to avoid traditional campaign tactics, such as featuring candidate portraits on posters, had a notable impact on voter recognition.

“Our campaign focused on policy-driven rallies where we did not display candidates’ faces on posters. That made it harder for voters to connect with the individuals they were being asked to support,” he said.

He also acknowledged that the party fielded a large number of new candidates, a factor he believes may have had both advantages and disadvantages depending on the constituency.

“In some areas, the presence of new faces without adequate visibility worked against us,” Ratnayake added.
