A coalition of opposition parties, including the United National Party (UNP), Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), National Freedom Front (NFF), Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), and Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU), announced the formation of a new political alliance titled “Maha Jana Handa” (Voice of the People).
The alliance, described as a unified opposition front, aims to launch a nationwide campaign challenging the government’s “deceptive rule.”
Organisers revealed plans to hold a mass protest in Nugegoda on November 21, under the theme “The people’s voice against the deceptive rule of the government.”
Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo on Monday (27), party leaders accused the current administration of misgovernance, corruption, and undemocratic conduct, claiming that the public has lost confidence in its leadership.
The organisers said the upcoming Nugegoda rally will mark the beginning of coordinated Opposition action across the country.
Notably absent from the announcement was the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
Although initially listed among the participating parties, no SJB representatives attended the briefing.
However, SJB MP S.M. Marikkar had intimated on Sunday (26) that the party would not join the proposed joint opposition rally, signalling divisions within the opposition bloc despite shared criticism of the government.
