Opposition MPs call for Select Committee to probe release of 323 containers

Opposition MPs have submitted a motion to Parliament seeking the appointment of a Select Committee to investigate the controversial release of 323 shipping containers from the Port of Colombo without mandatory physical inspection, in clear violation of established customs procedures.

The resolution highlights findings from a Treasury-appointed Committee of Inquiry, which warned that the irregular container release poses “serious risks to national security, revenue collection, and public safety.”

Two out of five members of the investigating committee had concluded that a significant procedural violation had occurred.

The inquiry was launched following media reports exposing the breach of customs regulations.

According to the motion, the Sri Lanka Customs Officers’ Union has publicly disavowed responsibility for the contents of the containers due to the irregular release process.

There are concerns the lapse may have facilitated the smuggling of narcotics, firearms, and other prohibited goods into the country.

Noting recent large-scale drug seizures and firearm incidents, the resolution underscores the gravity of the issue, describing it as a matter of national importance affecting public safety and the integrity of Sri Lanka’s port and customs systems.

The proposed Select Committee will investigate the legality of the container releases, identify those responsible, and determine whether any illicit goods were involved.

It will also review the roles of the Sri Lanka Customs and Ports Authority, evaluate the adequacy of existing laws and procedures, and recommend reforms to prevent recurrence.
