Possible ouster of PM Amarasuriya amid JVP-NPP clash?

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is reportedly grappling with internal discord within the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, with mounting criticism of its parliamentary representatives sparking serious consideration of a high-level cabinet reshuffle, most notably the potential replacement of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.

According to party insiders and multiple political sources, the JVP Central Committee, led by President and JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the performance, public conduct, and discipline of senior NPP Members of Parliament.

The criticism has been particularly sharp toward those holding executive posts, including Prime Minister Amarasuriya.

The developments signal what party sources identify as a “crisis of leadership” within the governing alliance, prompting urgent internal debate over possible corrective action.

At the centre of the discussions is a proposal to replace Amarasuriya, with Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation and Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake emerging as a potential successor.

While the idea of installing Rathnayake as Prime Minister is gaining traction among some in the JVP hierarchy, the party’s politburo remains divided.

Senior figures are reportedly wary of the political consequences such a move could trigger, including further destabilisation within the alliance and backlash from a public already showing signs of disillusionment.

The leadership tension follows a lacklustre performance by the NPP in recent local government elections.

Despite calls from within the party to issue a public statement acknowledging the results, President Dissanayake is said to have declined, fearing that it would fuel further negative sentiment.
