Talks begin on possible change in opposition leadership

Discussions have reportedly commenced over a possible change in the position of Leader of the Opposition, it is learnt.

Following a string of electoral setbacks including two presidential elections, three general elections, and one local government defeat, senior SJB MPs, along with civil society leaders and political analysts, have expressed concern that the current leadership is failing to effectively challenge the government or address key national issues.

They point out that under Sajith Premadasa’s leadership, the opposition has failed to function effectively as a counterbalance to the government, instead offering only occasional policy suggestions without confronting major national challenges head-on.

According to informed sources, several opposition lawmakers have emerged as potential successors.

MPs Namal Rajapaksa and Dayasiri Jayasekara are widely seen as more assertive alternatives who might better fulfil the demands of a robust opposition.
