‘Just a love tap’: Trump downplays latest US strikes on Iran

US President Donald Trump has downplayed the latest American military strikes on Iran, describing them as “just a love tap” despite renewed clashes in the Strait of Hormuz that have heightened fears of a wider regional conflict.

The comments came after US forces carried out retaliatory strikes against Iranian military assets following attacks on American naval destroyers operating near the strategic Gulf waterway. According to US officials, Iranian forces launched missiles, drones and fast attack boats targeting three US Navy vessels, though no American ships were damaged.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Trump insisted the situation remained under control and argued that a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran was still effectively in place.

“It was just a love tap,” Trump said, referring to the US military response. He added that Washington did not seek a broader war but warned Iran against further provocations.

The remarks quickly triggered criticism from political opponents and foreign policy analysts, many of whom argued that direct military exchanges between the United States and Iran undermine claims of de-escalation.

The latest confrontation follows months of mounting tensions after joint US-Israeli operations reportedly targeted Iranian military and nuclear facilities earlier this year. Iran responded with missile attacks, proxy operations and threats against international shipping routes in the Gulf.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil exports. Any instability in the area has immediate implications for international energy markets and global trade.

Iranian officials accused Washington of violating ceasefire understandings and escalating tensions through repeated military action. The White House rejected those claims, saying US operations were defensive and intended to protect naval personnel and commercial shipping.

Despite the latest violence, diplomatic efforts are continuing behind the scenes through regional intermediaries seeking to prevent a broader conflict. Officials familiar with the talks say discussions remain focused on maritime security, sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear activities.

Trump nevertheless indicated that stronger military action remained possible if Tehran failed to cooperate.

“There’ll be much more than a love tap if they don’t make peace,” he warned.

The exchange underscores the fragile state of US-Iran relations, with both sides publicly signaling restraint while continuing military operations that risk further escalation across the Middle East.
