A prison jailer and a guard attached to the Colombo Magazine Prison were arrested yesterday (27) by the Borella Police in connection with the death of a remand prisoner following an incident inside the facility.

Police stated that the arrests were made after an altercation involving two inmates and a prison guard, which resulted in three individuals sustaining injuries. The injured parties were subsequently admitted to the prison hospital for treatment.

One of the inmates, a 37-year-old resident of Nawagampura in Colombo 14, later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical care. Authorities confirmed that the deceased had been in remand custody on charges related to the possession of narcotics.

Investigations into the incident have been launched on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police. The probe is being conducted under the supervision of Colombo Division DIG Nishantha Soysa, with the Borella Police, the Colombo Division Criminal Investigation Division, and the Colombo South Division Criminal Investigation Unit assisting in ongoing inquiries.

Police said further details will be released as investigations progress.
