Former President’s arrest will shift Sri Lanka’s political direction, says Dilith

The arrest and imprisonment of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe marks a turning point in Sri Lanka’s political direction, Leader of the Sarvajana Balaya MP Dilith Jayaweera said.

Speaking to reporters after visiting Wickremesinghe at the Prison Hospital this afternoon, Jayaweera criticised the government’s handling of the case.

“He went to play cricket, but this government is playing ‘Elle’,” he said, using a local sporting metaphor. “They hit him with the ball and said he was out.”

While distancing himself from Wickremesinghe’s political legacy, Jayaweera expressed concern over the treatment of a former head of state.

“I will not endorse Ranil Wickremesinghe’s politics. However, the way a former President has been treated is deeply troubling. I’m not here to pass judgment on the court’s decision but the sequence of events leading up to the investigation and judicial process raises serious concerns and does little to uphold the dignity or reputation of our country,” he added.
