Govt to convene all-party meeting to resolve PC election deadlock

Provincial Council elections in Sri Lanka have been at a standstill for eight years due to a legal deadlock, but the government is now convening a meeting of all political parties and civil society groups to break the impasse.

Public Administration Minister Dr. Chandana Abeyratne said the law governing the elections is currently unclear, with the previous legislation expired and the new framework incomplete. 

The deadlock began in 2017 when Parliament rejected the delimitation report under the mixed electoral system, leaving a procedural loophole unresolved.

Until the elections are held, Governors continue to exercise powers normally devolved to elected councils.
