Minister of Plantation Industries Samantha Vidyaratna was jeered at an event in Badulla on Saturday (02).

The incident took place during a District Youth Council meeting convened to appoint a new committee of office-bearers.

As the Minister took the podium, sections of the audience protested, accusing the government of manipulating the selection process to serve political agendas.

Protesters alleged that the appointment of the council’s leadership was heavily influenced by political interests, undermining the legitimacy of the process. Despite the disruption, Minister Vidyaratna completed his remarks and left the venue shortly thereafter.

This is not an isolated case. Similar allegations of political interference in youth council appointments have surfaced across the country.

Deputy Minister Eranga Gunasekara also faced stiff opposition during the Gampaha Youth Council event, while comparable unrest was reported in the Matale District as well.
