The budget of the National People’s Power (NPP)-controlled Soranathota Pradeshiya Sabha was defeated yesterday (07) by a margin of three votes.

The council convened under Chairman Asoka Keerthi Jayalath, where the 2026 budget proposal was formally presented.

All five NPP members voted in favour of the budget, while the opposition voted against it.

However, three council members were absent during the voting, which contributed to the narrow defeat.

The inaugural budget of the Kolonna Pradeshiya Sabha, also administered by the NPP, was defeated at its first reading on Thursday (06).
