NPP courted Pillayan to control Batticaloa Municipal Council – Rasamanickam

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian Shanakiyan Rasamanickam has alleged that the National People’s Power (NPP) sought the support of former State Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, widely known as “Pillayan”, in an attempt to secure control of the Batticaloa Municipal Council.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, Rasamanickam claimed that the NPP, often vocal about political reform and clean governance, was prepared to adopt “unconventional political manoeuvres” to establish its authority in the local body. He accused the left-leaning party of abandoning its stated principles in pursuit of power in the Eastern province.

“Despite its rhetoric, the NPP was negotiating with forces it has long criticised. Their attempt to gain control of the Batticaloa council through Pillayan’s support shows a stark contradiction between their ideals and actions,” Rasamanickam said.

He added that, ultimately, the TNA was able to secure the leadership of the council and successfully appointed a Tamil mayor. This, he said, was achieved with the support of two elected members from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), ensuring the council remains under Tamil political leadership.
