Despite former President Ranil Wickremesinghe stating that it was too late to talk about the Batalanda Commission report, the government would take legal action based on it, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said on Sunday.
He told reporters that the government had tabled the report in Parliament as promised and planned to hold a two-day debate in April and May.
He said the government has decided to appoint a committee on this matter and will also forward the report to the Attorney General’s Department.
The Minister noted that the United National Party (UNP) and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa’s Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) have argued against the debate, but the government had taken steps to allocate a day for it.
He stated that former President Wickremesinghe was the only person who knew what had exactly transpired at Batalanda and that he remained silent on it until it was raised in a recent interview with Al Jazeera.
“Not now. Ranil could have talked about it for the past 35 years. He did not say anything until Al Jazeera raised the issue. Ranil, it’s too late now,” he said.
