Ratnapura MC rejects NPP-led budget for second time

The 2026 budget of the Ratnapura Municipal Council, controlled by the National People’s Power (NPP), was defeated for a second time yesterday.

The budget failed by a narrow margin, with 13 council members voting in favor and 14 voting against it, according to local reports.

All 27 members of the municipal council were present for the vote.

The defeat follows an earlier rejection on Decemebr 12, when the council voted down the NPP’s maiden budget by a single vote, with 12 members in favor and 13 against.

Two members were absent during that session.

Under local government laws, repeated failures to pass a municipal budget can trigger significant administrative hurdles for the party controlling the council.

In another development, the annual budget of the Peliyagoda Urban Council, also controlled by the NPP, was defeated on Friday (19) by a single vote.
