The Sarvajana Balaya movement has announced its decision not to participate in the anti-government rally organised by a combined opposition in Nugegoda on October 21, following a similar decision earlier made by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

Speaking to the media on Wednesday (29), Sarvajana Balaya leader Dilith Jayaweera said his movement would not take part in namesake alliances formed without meaningful discussion or consensus.

“Such unions that emerge without dialogue or a clear plan will not succeed,” Jayaweera said, emphasizing that it is futile to raise a loud voice without a serious conversation on poverty reduction, national development, and governance reform.

While criticizing the government’s repressive and anti-democratic actions, Jayaweera stressed the importance of unity and strategy among opposition forces, calling for a collective approach to contest elections under an agreed framework.

He further asserted that Sarvajana Balaya would oppose any attempt by the government to hold provincial council elections in a way that sidelines or nullifies the opposition’s role.
