The election to appoint a new Chairman for the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha, which commenced on Tuesday (17) under the leadership of Western Provincial Commissioner Sarangika Jayasundara, has been postponed until further notice.

The proceedings were halted after members failed to reach consensus on whether the election should be held through an open vote or a secret ballot.

One faction favored an open vote, while the opposing group insisted on a secret ballot. Given this disagreement, Commissioner Jayasundara exercised her authority and announced that the election would proceed via secret ballot.

This decision triggered strong opposition, leading 24 members to walk out of the assembly hall in protest.

As a result, the session lacked the required quorum, prompting the Commissioner to initially adjourn the meeting for 30 minutes.

However, due to the continued absence of consensus and quorum, Commissioner Jayasundara subsequently announced the indefinite postponement of all proceedings related to the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha.
