United National Party (UNP) Chairman and former Minister Wajira Abeywardena yesterday (27) warned that Sri Lanka may face a massive collapse by the end of this year, highlighting deepening political and economic instability.

Speaking at a media briefing held in Galle, Abeywardena predicted that the country could face a critical collapse between September and December unless urgent corrective measures are taken.

“Sri Lanka is heading towards a situation where, as a nation, we will either experience a severe downturn or become ungovernable. This is the reality we must be prepared to face by the final quarter of the year,” he said.

He observed that the UNP, together with other opposition parties, is actively formulating contingency plans to manage such a crisis, including strategies to stabilise the country and safeguard the public.

“All opposition forces, including the UNP, are working together to design a framework for national recovery. We are thinking ahead, not only to rebuild the country but also to ensure the protection of the people when the country faces collapse,” Abeywardena said.
