United National Party (UNP) Chairman Wajira Abeywardena urged Sri Lanka’s political parties to set aside partisan differences and work together in the interest of the country and its people.

Addressing a press briefing on Monday, Abeywardena noted that, apart from the ruling party, Sri Lanka has 67 registered political parties and another 15 seeking registration.

He said each has a responsibility to contribute to a common national purpose rather than deepen political divisions.

Abeywardena also referenced recent remarks by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, who accused the government of misleading the public.

He added that UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe believes 1,000 meetings should be held nationwide to explain the party’s future priorities to citizens.

Commenting on political activity on the ground, Abeywardena said the “Mahajana Handa” rally held in Nugegoda last week was “highly successful.”

He highlighted that 40 political parties participated in the UNP’s anniversary convention, including representatives from the main opposition, as part of efforts to promote political cooperation.

Abeywardena said the political culture must shift away from what he described as an “era of lies,” arguing that dishonesty has destabilized society and weakened public confidence in political institutions.

He also extended his gratitude to all political parties and members of the public for supporting the UNP’s “Voice of the People” campaign.
