The United National Party (UNP) is marking its 79th anniversary today with a ceremony at the Monarch Imperial Hotel in Battaramulla.

This year’s commemoration is being held under the theme “Stand by your beliefs – Unite to defeat constitutional dictatorship”.

Speaking ahead of the event, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene described the anniversary as a rallying point for all democratic forces.

He also reaffirmed the party’s founding vision, noting its historic role in uniting people across ethnic and religious lines since its inception by D.S. Senanayake.

However, the ceremony is expected to be marked by the absence of Opposition Leader and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa.

While formal invitations were extended to all opposition parties, including the SJB and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), party sources say that Premadasa will not be in attendance.
The SJB is, however, likely to be represented by its General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara and a group of party MPs.
