The United National Party (UNP) has announced its decision to appoint representatives to local government bodies solely based on the percentage of votes each candidate received, in a move aimed at ensuring transparency and merit-based representation.

According to a party spokesperson, only candidates who have secured the highest vote percentages will be eligible to represent the UNP in local government institutions.

The decision was taken by a committee tasked with overseeing the party’s local government appointments.

UNP leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has reportedly instructed that this decision must remain unchanged under any circumstances, underscoring the party’s commitment to uphold electoral performance as the key criterion.
