Sri Lanka has canceled its leg of the King’s Baton Relay for the 2026 Commonwealth Games following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

The relay, originally scheduled from November 28 to December 3, was called off after the cyclone struck the island on November 27, causing widespread loss of life, massive displacement, and extensive damage across multiple regions.

The Commonwealth Games Association of Sri Lanka (CGA Sri Lanka), through the National Olympic Committee, said it made the decision to prioritize humanitarian needs over ceremonial activities.

Although all operational plans and logistics for the relay had been finalized, the organization redirected resources, manpower, and funding to assist affected communities.

Relief efforts were coordinated with national partners and recognized agencies to maximize effectiveness.

Commonwealth Sport was promptly informed and endorsed the cancellation, acknowledging the urgent humanitarian situation.

CGA Sri Lanka emphasized that the safety and wellbeing of the nation remained paramount.

While the country continues preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the CGA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting recovery and aiding communities impacted by the disaster.
