Sri Lanka’s rising badminton star Dumindu Abeywickrama is set to compete at the XIV Santo Domingo Open 2025 in the Dominican Republic, aiming to add a fifth international medal to his growing collection.
The BWF-sanctioned event runs from 15 to 19 October, where Dumindu hopes to secure his second gold medal in just two months.
Currently ranked 115 in the BWF Men’s Singles standings, Dumindu has emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising shuttlers on the international stage.
His recent success in the Latin American circuit has seen him claim a gold, two silvers, and a bronze from four tournaments since early September.
Abeywickrama’s most notable recent triumph came at the Guatemala International Challenge 2025 where he clinched the Men’s Singles gold medal with an unbeaten run, including a straight-sets victory over the USA’s Mark Shelley (BWF 106) in the final.
Along the way, he defeated higher-ranked opponents such as Croatia’s Aria Dinata (BWF 68) and Peru’s Adriano Viale (BWF 105), highlighting his growing competitiveness.
Abeywickrama’s Latin American tour began with a bronze at the VLL Guatemala Future Series, followed by silver medals at the Il Costa Rica Future Series and the La Perla Del Otun Future Series in Colombia, where he narrowly lost finals to experienced players including the USA’s Enrico Asuncion and Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon (BWF 77).
He currently trains in Seattle under renowned coach Rohith Halase Gowda while his international schedule is managed by Sri Lanka’s national coach Yukthi Perera as part of the country’s badminton development programme.
