Sri Lanka’s Pradeep Somasiri delivered a record-breaking performance to claim bronze in the Men’s 1500m T46 at the World Para Athletics Championships on Saturday, setting a new Asian record in the process.

The 26-year-old clocked 3:53.77 to secure his place on the podium in one of the closest finishes of the meet.

The race was won by independent para athlete Aleksandr Iaremchuk in 3:53.26, with France’s Antoine Praud taking silver in 3:53.62.

Somasiri, who previously won gold in this event at the Asian Para Games in 2022, showed his class once again on the world stage and his performance marked Sri Lanka’s second medal of the championships, following Nuwan Indika Gamage’s bronze in the T44 Long Jump earlier in the week.
