In a stark reminder of Sri Lanka’s escalating road safety crisis, 15 people have lost their lives in road accidents reported across the island within a 24-hour period ending yesterday morning (18), according to Sri Lanka Police.
Seven of the fatal accidents occurred on Monday (17), while the remaining incidents were reported overnight and into Tuesday.
The accidents were reported from across the country, including Wariyapola, Serunuwara, Kahatagasdigiliya, Kochchikade, Hanwella, Thalawa, Nagoda, Karadiyanaru, Kaduwela, Madampe, Pulathisipura, Pallewela, Wennappuwa, Opanayake, and Uppuweli.
Of the 15 fatalities, eight were linked to motorcycle accidents.
Six pedestrians were also fatally struck by various vehicles. One passenger travelling in a three-wheeler was also among the deceased.
Police have expressed serious concern over the alarming frequency of road accidents, calling for stricter adherence to traffic laws and heightened public awareness regarding road safety.
