The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has reported that 40% of the fish harvested by multi-day fishing vessels are of inferior quality.

This follows findings from the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA), which highlighted that issues such as fishing methods, excessive crushing of fish, and poor ice quality contributed to the decline in quality.

With the country producing 400,000 metric tons of fish for human consumption annually, over 300,000 metric tons are brought to market by these vessels.

M. Marks, Director of the Department, emphasized that efforts are underway, in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries, to address these concerns.

Special measures are expected to be implemented under the new Fisheries Act to improve the situation.
