The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has warned that around 7,000 doctors have now decided to leave the country.

Secretary of the association Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa said around 5,000 doctors have readied their passports to leave the country.

Thus, state hospitals will face a shortage of around 7,000 doctors if the government doesn’t give doctors their due from the 2025 budget, Dr. Sugathadasa warned at a media briefing in Colombo.

He said the GMOA will submit a set of proposals to the president to be incorporated into the budget to encourage doctors to remain in Sri Lanka and to safeguard the free health service.

He also called for a special salary structure for doctors based on their qualifications, performance and market value and for the updating of the allowance paid to them.

The GMOA revealed that around 2,000 doctors have already migrated.
