Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Kabir Hashim criticized President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s budget during a parliamentary session on Wednesday (19), likening it to a continuation of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s economic policies.

Hashim claimed the budget, while appearing socialist, ultimately followed an open economic model with a liberal approach.

Hashim highlighted that the budget reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to structural reforms, debt restructuring, and international relations, particularly with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Hashim criticized the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) for what he saw as hypocrisy, stating that while they condemned previous governments’ actions, they accepted and implemented similar policies through this budget.

He argued that the sacrifices made by young people in the pursuit of socialism had been disrespected, and their efforts were undermined by the presentation of this economic plan.

Hashim accused the Government of betraying the ideals of socialism and breaking the trust of the people, claiming that by presenting the budget on February 17, the JVP had abandoned its core principles and the faith of its supporters.
