Natural disasters and disaster management are getting foremost attention with the death toll from the present extreme weather-related incidents having reached 47.

Social media is full of discussions on issues such as the importance of safeguarding natural environment, proper drainage maintenance, urbanization etc.

In the meantime, videos showing president Anura Kumara Dissanayake criticizing the then government over its tackling of natural disasters in mid-2024 are going viral now.

In one video, he questions the non-utilization of technology that helps collect statistics and predict imminent disasters, highest rainfall and flooding threats etc.

In another he says rain is a natural occurrence, but disasters are not.

Now, social media criticize his rule, which is into its second year, for failing to properly enforce the state disaster management mechanism in the face of disasters.
