An island found to release monkeys – Minister

The government has commenced a program to catch monkeys and an island has been identified to release the captured animals, says Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lal Kantha.

He said that this research program is overseen by NPP MP Jagath Manuwarana.

Minister Lal Kantha expressed these views while addressing a function held in the Kandy area.

Sri Lankan farmers have protested against the government’s failure to control the growing population of monkeys, especially the Toque Macaques, which severely threatens their livelihoods.

The farmers say the growing monkey population is damaging coconuts, paddy, vegetables, chilies, and fruits like mangoes, papayas, and plantains.
