‘Aswesuma’ already has 1.8 million beneficiaries, and another 900,000 have applied for the welfare benefit scheme, said social security minister Dr. Upali Pannilage.
He was speaking to journalists at the Government Information Department with regard to ‘Praja Shakthi’, a rural poverty eradication programme.
It will be launched today (04) at 2.00 pm at Temple Trees, presided by president Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The programme aims to introduce an all-inclusive institutional mechanism and community participatory development approach against rural poverty.
In 2000, the country had 1.1 million poor families, which rose to 1.5 m in 2010 and to 1.8 by 2024.
