Leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU), Udaya Gammanpila says that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has become the first ruler in Sri Lanka’s history to take a Buddha statue into custody.

He recalled that even during the periods of colonial rule, when the country was governed by imperial powers, such an act against Buddhism had never occurred.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday (19), Gammanpila described the incident as a moment that has stirred deep unease throughout the entire Buddhist community.
