The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has confirmed that a bacterial infection is responsible for the recent deaths of several animals in Beira Lake.

Laboratory tests conducted on tissue samples from deceased birds identified Pasteurella multocida, a bacteria known to cause diseases in animals, as the culprit.

Chief Veterinary Officer Mohammad Ijaz announced the findings, adding that CMC has swiftly begun administering antibiotic vaccinations to the remaining animals around the lake to prevent the spread of infection. “We are taking all necessary measures to safeguard the animals and stop further fatalities,” Ijaz said.

In addition to the vaccinations, the CMC is conducting ongoing blood tests and other investigations to monitor the situation closely. The council has assured the public that steps are being taken to control the outbreak and that preventive measures will continue until the situation is fully contained.

Beira Lake, a landmark in the city, is home to various species of birds and animals, and the CMC is urging visitors and the public to avoid unnecessary contact with wildlife until further notice.
