Bribery probe sought against Trade Minister

A formal was lodged yesterday (30) with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) against Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe, accusing him of involvement in a major financial irregularity related to salt imports.

Several civil organisations allege that salt imported at around Rs. 75 per kilogram is now being sold in the local market at an inflated price of Rs. 320 per kilogram.

They claim this vast price discrepancy points to significant financial misconduct and possible corruption in the import process.

The complainants have called for a thorough investigation into the matter, urging authorities to ensure accountability and prevent exploitation of consumers through artificial price hikes.
