The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) says that Budget 2026 reflects continued adherence to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) curtailment programme, while failing to address the real concerns of the public.
Speaking to reporters in Nugegoda, FSP Education Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda said the opposition in Parliament is not fundamentally opposed to the budget’s policy framework but noted minor shortcomings.
Jayagoda highlighted internal political disputes, saying concerns raised by MPs such as Ravi Karunanayake and Harsha de Silva focus on political grievances rather than public issues.
“Neither side discusses a single public issue relating to the budget,” he said.
He criticized the budget for imposing additional indirect taxes on citizens while curtailing capital expenditures on essential public services.
Jayagoda added that the FSP is prepared to lead anti-budget initiatives outside Parliament, signaling plans for public mobilization in response to the government’s fiscal policies.
