Budget row in Nuwara Eliya as opposition condemns mayor’s perks proposals

The opposition members of the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council have voiced objections to two proposals included in the 2026 municipal budget report.

These proposals involve providing a new official vehicle for the Mayor and constructing a fully equipped luxury official residence for him.

UNP group leader and municipal councillor Susantha Priylal Palihawadana, together with independent group councillor Ven. Makandure Rathanawansa Thero, speaking to the media, charged that such requests contradict earlier promises made by public representatives.

“During elections, some Members of Parliament claimed that they did not need official vehicles or residences. But now they seem eager to acquire new vehicles and luxury housing. This shows a troubling desire for personal comfort at the expense of public funds,” the opposition councilors said.

Both proposals were approved during the monthly meeting held on November 14.
