BYD scandal: Importers may face penalties

Sri Lanka Customs will take action regarding discrepancies identified in the declared motor capacities of certain BYD electric vehicles imported into the country, Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Prof. Anil Jayantha said.

Speaking during a talk show on a private television channel, the Minister noted that while some of these vehicles have already been cleared by Customs, they are still subject to post-clearance audits.

“If an error is found in the declared motor capacity, any shortfall in duty will have to be paid,” Jayantha said.

The issue stems from recent concerns raised over inconsistencies between the declared and actual motor specifications of some BYD electric vehicles.

Jayantha further clarified that the importer would bear full responsibility for any outstanding tax obligations arising from the investigation.
