Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the recent arrest and remanding of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

In her statement, Kumaratunga questioned the timing of the arrest, which comes as the investigation into Wickremesinghe nears completion.

She warned that the move raises serious doubts about the strength and independence of the country’s democratic institutions.

“What we are witnessing is a calculated onslaught on the very essence of our democratic values. The consequences of this go far beyond the fate of an individual or any political grouping, and involve peril for the rights of our society as a whole,” she said.

She also urged all political leaders to stand united in resisting efforts that undermine democratic norms.
