The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has announced that it will write off outstanding electricity charges totaling over Rs. 250 million owed by various places of public religious worship across the country.

This decision follows a report by the National Audit Office, which revealed the extensive nature of the unpaid dues.

According to the board’s management, the substantial amount in arrears is deemed uncollectible, and efforts to recover the funds have been unsuccessful.

The investigation by the National Audit Office uncovered that more than Rs. 70 million of the total debt has been overdue for over five years, highlighting the long-standing nature of the issue.

In addition, the audit report noted that the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Cultural Affairs has an outstanding balance of over Rs. 800,000, dating back to 2012.

Despite multiple requests from the CEB, no significant response has been received from the ministry regarding the overdue payments.
