A police constable arrested in connection with an alleged assault involving a National People’s Power (NPP) lawmaker from Sri Lanka’s Ratnapura District has sought police protection, citing threats to his life and the safety of his family.
The officer visited the Kolonna Police Station on Saturday to record a statement related to the incident.
Speaking to reporters, he said the visit followed a written complaint he submitted on Dec. 26 to the deputy inspector general of police for the Ratnapura Range, requesting protection over concerns for his personal safety.
The constable said none of the individuals he alleges were involved in assaulting him have been taken into custody and claimed they remain at large.
He said this has created a credible threat to his life and to his family members.
He also said he has yet to receive justice in connection with the incident.
The constable was arrested on December 22 by officers from the Embilipitiya Divisional Investigation Bureau in connection with the alleged assault involving Ratnapura District NPP MP Shantha Pathma Kumara Subasingha.
He was taken into custody on several charges, including criminal intimidation.
Police said the officer was later released on bail after being produced before court.
He has since been suspended from service pending further investigations into the matter.
