The recording of evidence in the magisterial inquiry into the death of a youth while in the custody of the Welikada police will take place from 16 May.
Taking up the matter yesterday (30), the Colombo magistrate’s court ordered the CID to notify five witnesses to testify at the hearing into the death of Sathsara Nimesh.
Additional magistrate Manjula Ratnayake considered a request by the CID which reported the exhumation of the youth’s remains as per a previous order.
A panel of three doctors conducted a postmortem examination again, it said, and submitted a preliminary report to the court.
Samples taken from the body have been referred to the chief JMO for examination.
A total of 22 witnesses have been named in the case.
The 26-year-old dancer and model had also been undergoing training in nursing.
According to a statement issued by the police, a team was sent to a house in Nawala on 01 April on information about an intruder.
The suspect seemed to be mentally unstable and he was immediately taken to the police station for his protection, it said.
At the police cell, the youth had acted in an unruly manner, banging himself on the wall and was uncontrollable.
After much effort, he was taken to the mental health institute in Mulleriyawa.
He died there in the early hours of next morning, police added.
However, relatives allege doctors claimed Sathsara had been dead on admission.
He was buried in front of his home, and the body was exhumed in the presence of the Badulla magistrate.
Following the fresh postmortem examination, the body was taken to Colombo under police protection.
