Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala has raised concerns over the recent transfer of a police officer involved in a major drug raid, claiming the officer was moved based on false allegations stemming from an intelligence report.
The officer, formerly stationed at the Maharagama Police Station, was transferred to Mullaitivu following a successful drug bust. According to the Minister, the intelligence report suggested that the officer had illicit ties to a drug trafficker, prompting the transfer.
Minister Watagala expressed doubt over the accuracy of the report, noting that a significant number of residents had visited the Ministry to defend the officer. “At least 10 to 12 people from the area came forward, attesting to the officer’s role in combating drug activity,” he said.
The Minister urged the police to exercise caution in their duties and investigations, adding that while he does not wish to place blame, it is essential to ensure that officers are not wrongly punished for their efforts in maintaining law and order.
Largest transfer of officers in history
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Police announced the transfer of 139 Officers-in-Charge (OICs) within the department, marking the largest such transfer in the institution’s history.
The transfers include 105 Chief Inspectors of Police (CIs) and 34 Inspectors of Police (IPs), police sources confirmed.
The transfers will be implemented in two phases, scheduled to take effect on February 13 and February 18.
