Opposition groups trying to form administrations in local government bodies will not be allowed to carry out any development work, said deputy minister T.B. Sarath.

He told a function in Welikanda that arch rivals in the opposition are getting together to gain control of LG bodies, but that thieves won’t be handed over the development.

They will have the chairmanships and deputy chairmanships and they will attend ceremonial events, but nothing else will happen, said Sarath, adding the government will utilize the funds.

Court cases will be filed against them if they try to do unnecessary things, he said, adding the government was prepared to settle matters within courts.
