Applications for disaster relief assistance should be submitted to the respective divisional secretary on recommendation by the Praja Shakthi committee and on approval by the Grama Niladhari, said minister K.D. Lalkantha.

The Grama Niladhari can make decisions in collaboration with the Praja Shakthi committees, also representative of state officials in the village, he said.

Lalkantha alleged both politicians and Grama Niladhari officers had acted as per their wishes in the past.

Praja Shakthi committees are the mechanism that brings officials and people’s representatives together, added the minister.
