Five Chinese nationals were detained at Katunayake Airport on Wednesday (13) after authorities confirmed they attempted to enter Sri Lanka to commit cyber fraud, officials said.

Steps have been taken to deport the group.

The individuals arrived around 10:30 am on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-405 from Bangkok, Thailand.

During routine immigration checks, suspicions arose, prompting senior immigration officials to question them.

The suspects had claimed they were coming to Sri Lanka to work for a company in Colombo Port City and had obtained pre-arrival employment visas.

Following investigations, the five were handed over to SriLankan Airlines for deportation, authorities confirmed.
