Five Sri Lanka Navy personnel have died while carrying out a flood-mitigation operation in the Chundikkulam area, police said.

The sailors went missing earlier today while engaged in widening a waterway as part of ongoing flood-relief efforts.

The Navy immediately launched a search and rescue operation, deploying teams to the site.

Navy Spokesperson Captain Gayan Wickramasuriya said that the personnel were part of a team assisting communities affected by recent heavy rains and flooding when the incident occurred.

Search operations continued into the evening amid challenging weather conditions, with all five bodies recovered by authorities.
