Several tonnes of garbage remain piled up for some time in the Ja Kotuwa beach and the main vegetable market in Galle town to cause considerable environmental pollution, said area residents.

They accused the municipal council of turning a blind eye to the situation.

According to mayor Sunil Gamage, piles of unsorted garbage are being removed by the municipal council.

A land will be sought from Akmeemana to be used as a dumping ground for the garbage and a garbage recycling machine will be acquired as solutions to the issue within a short period, he added.
